We got introduced to Lokesh Kanakaraj only after Kaithi hit the screens, but his initial film, Maanagaram, surpassed Kaithi in terms of excellence. Released in 2017, Maanagaram stands out as a flawless action thriller. Initially, the story and characters are like a solved Rubik’s Cube, but as the plot unfolds, the pattern changes, making the narrative more intricate and complex. Lokesh’s work represents an innovative approach rarely seen in the Tamil film industry. Speaking of the technical aspects, the film stands out with its unique graphical shots, special effects, and editing, setting it apart from previous movies. This distinctiveness provides the audience with a refreshing experience, evident right from the title song.
-The scene of taking the cash from the hero’s wallet and throwing away the wallet-
-The scene where the hero’s driving license falls out of the purse-
The director demonstrates a keen focus on graphic intricacies. For instance, in PKP, the name of the bumbling kidnapper assigned to the gangster known as Winnings is the only one disclosed in the narrative, with no other character’s name mentioned throughout the story.
A young man (Sundeep Kishan) trudges through the city, a middle-aged taxi driver (Charlie) is new to the city, Kidnappers gang including the Winnings, PKP and his gang, IT Company HR Officer (Regina), a young man (Sree) came from the village to the city for work, the central plot of the film revolves around the interconnection of these characters. One scene that particularly fascinated us occurred when the taxi driver guided Charlie and Mr. to a toll booth at night. The director portrayed the deception by the toddy man using a time-lapse shot, a technique that felt incredibly unique.
Likewise, another scene that confuses the audience is rich in contrasts. Kidnappers, ready to negotiate the ransom, are depicted alongside PKP standing in front of Nera with a car. The subsequent conversation is presented through a cross-cut, creating an illusion that they are all in one location. However, with a slide transition, it becomes apparent that it is Sri and the taxi driver standing there with the car, adding a surprising twist to the narrative.
– Kidnappers waiting for ransom-
– Later conversation with PKP –
The movie concludes with the resolutions of all the characters’ stories, akin to solving an unsolved Rubik’s Cube as mentioned earlier. This film delves into the darker aspects of Chennai city and the less virtuous youth, but Lokesh and his team have portrayed it in a distinct and compelling manner. It is certain to carve a significant niche in the Tamil cinema landscape.
